Mark Longo rescued the orphaned baby squirrel Peanut in the woods and bottle-fed him for 8 months. Then Mark released the rodent. However, the squirrel had returned to his rescuer’s home, choosing to stay as a beloved pet. Adding to the public’s outrage, a raccoon companion of Peanut’s was also seized and euthanized.

In his message on X, Elon Musk questioned why the authorities made such a radical decision rather than releasing the animals. Peanut’s story left a wave of sadness and anger. Now a euthanized squirrel is perceived as a symbol for government overreach. People united under the slogan “Justice for Peanut”, while Republicans rallied behind “Vote for Trump and Peanut”.
