Will We Soon Stop Seeing Stars? The Digital Veil Grows Thicker

Expanding their presence in space, humans simultaneously hinder their progress. The number of satellites in orbit grows rapidly. Now, nearly everything on Earth is controlled from space, yet paradoxically, we may soon lose access to something that has inspired humanity for millennia: the stars.

For thousands of years, people gazed at the night sky, dreaming of the future. Humanity planned to explore distant worlds. If obstacles arose, they were often due to weather conditions or limited technology. Today, we can disperse clouds, and telescopes grow more powerful every year. However, a new challenge looms: light pollution—coming from both Earth and space.

Artificial lighting on Earth is growing 10% brighter annually, but the situation has worsened with the surge of new satellites. As of June 2024, there were 11,780 satellites orbiting the Earth, about half of which belong to SpaceX’s Starlink program. However, its plans to double that number soon are concerning. That’s just from one company!

Scientists are now sounding the alarm. In our quest to control everything on Earth, we risk losing sight of the vast, unexplored universe beyond. Isn't this ironic? The technology we develop to advance our understanding of space may be limiting our view of it.

The stars have always inspired people. Poets, explorers, and scientists have created, invented, and advanced by looking to the stars. Now, we risk becoming a society that no longer looks up in awe. What will happen to our imagination if future generations grow up without ever truly seeing the stars? This is really creepy. These walls of technology will change us forever.

In a way, we are isolating ourselves from the vastness of the universe, locking ourselves within the confines of our own technological advancements. We’ve learned so much - but at what cost?
